My Photos are”Too Artsy” for stock…

antique-rose

(Looks like WordPress has deemed it wrong to show pictures full size anymore…Geez!)

Apparently, in my quest for the best possible picture, I outgrew the stock photo industry. According to one stock agency, the featured photo above is not high quality enough because it is only 4.2 mb in size. Furthermore, it is out of focus. Lastly, it is over manipulated.

Yes, I will agree that the above picture is not from a DSLR. It is from a Nikon P510 which is no crappy camera, by any means. It was $450.00 when I bought it and takes pretty awesome pics. It is a 16MP camera that is, by no means or way, a phone camera. The file size certainly is not too small.

Of course, the out of focus BS is purely crap. The only thing out of focus in this photo is the background, which happens with every GOOD camera when shooting macro. To state this as a reason for rejection is just beyond stupid.

Lastly, over manipulated? WTF is wrong with people now-a-days? I changed the photo to black and white, and added back in a selective amount of color. If that is over-manipulation, then I might as well throw in the towel, because this is one of my least manipulated photos.

Because they rejected this photo, they rejected 3 others that were with it. That is just pure laziness, and a sign that these stock agencies have too much stock, if they are turning down photos like this. This is original, detailed, and artistic. Apparently, that is not what they want.

I have uploaded the full size picture (4608 x 3456 px) so you can see for yourself what you cannot get from a stock agency.

I am sorry, I refuse to compromise quality to sell photos for next to nothing. I want to give clients quality, interesting photos. Not something lame, boring, and of low quality.

It saddens me to see that true art is unappreciated anymore.

Wealthy homes with Awesome Christmas lights!!!

I completely took these pictures for unselfish reasons. I was going to share them on my social media websites, because I thought it would be a thoughtful and nice thing to do. How can trying to share the Christmas spirit with others ever be seen as anything but kind?

However, it is Christmas time, so let’s not bother with ethics, morals, or other such non-issues and let just focus on the good things, like these photos. I will admit that night photography is not my strength. But, I believe my first attempt at it was not bad. 80% of the pictures turned out clear and it would have been 100% if I have not bothered trying the handheld night scene mode on my DSLR camera.

These pictures that were taken were of award winning wealthy homes in my area. I never do anything half-ass. So sit back, enjoy the pictures and thanks for visiting!!!

As for Instagram

I thought since I spoke briefly about 500 px, it would only be fair to include another popular social photo sharing website…Instagram.

I find it remarkable and completely idiotic that people use this site. Any TRUE professional would never use this app or site. Did you know the second you upload a picture to Instagram, they own all rights to it? Yes, they can use your photos and make money off of your photos, without giving you single penny. So why would any serious photographer use this site/app? Seriously! I don’t know about you but my equipment costs far too much to just be giving away my final product, and that is not even considering all the time spent on processing the pictures.

To be honest, I’m slightly miffed at the app/site because I got my account temporarily suspended. Why? I have no clue! They never told me why and they suspended me without investigating. Seems like shady business practices going on there. Yes, I could go back and post more photos, but I most certainly will not. I do not trust any site that suspends people for no reason without investigating and then unsuspends an account with explanation. That is far out of my comfort zone. It should be noted that I did nothing wrong and I have never been suspended from ANY website…EVER!

Instagram also has the same kind of people who do nothing, but follow and unfollow. I think all of these “social” websites need to re-think showing how many followers people have. It seems to force the ignorant into doing stupid things like I mentioned above. If the site is supposed to be social, tell me exactly why the fuck it matters how many people follow each other? That is not social, that is a completely competitive atmosphere!

At any rate, I have spoken enough about this subject to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Time to go rinse! Take care!

500 Px blows!!!

The site is filled with a bunch of idiots who think you are supposed to follow and then unfollow others, as soon as you follow back. The reason I say they are idiots is because they think a person with 4 followers cannot tell that they unfollowed.

Furthermore, the site is slow! So slow that if I did not have to upload stock photos, I would not even bother.

Is it any wonder I have not sold a single stock photo? No business wants to waste time with idiots, who think getting other idiots to follow them, makes them great photographers, or a site that is so slow as to be unproductive. Why would any business looking for stock photos waste their time?

Luckily, 500 px is not the only stock photo site, because I simply don’t want to waste anymore time on the site than I have to.

The problem is this stock photo website implements social BS into it site. A stock photo site does NOT need this. It just bogs down the website, making it harder for any serious business looking for stock photos. 500 px needs to get rid of the social bs, if they want to truly compete with other stock photo sites.

Once I have all my current stock files uploaded, I cannot see coming back to the site for any reason. The only reason I came there in the first place was, because I thought they had less stock photos and thus it might be easier for businesses to find my photos. I was sadly mistaken. My advice to others is to avoid this site like the plaque. You will thank me for sparing you the headache.

All Things Considered…

When I began this new road in my life, I thought I had considered all the options available to me. Upon expanded research, I discovered some things that I had not known. Things which make a huge difference in how I walk this road. I thought I would take a moment to share them with you. Maybe you might find some value for your own path.

Let’s get started with Twitter since that was the last thing I spoke of. As mentioned in my previous post, Twitter seems to be in a freefall. Not just due to the limitations of the platform, but also due to the limited understanding of most of its users. They do not seem to get how useful and important retweeting is. Thus Twitter usuage is going down daily.

If Twitter could figure out a way of making it evident what people like, then they would have a built-in sharing mechanism. I have learned, that not only are people reluctant to share tweets made at Twitter, they are less likely to even read anything from outside of the site, such as this post. Just how bad it really is, can be seen with one simple example.

I posted the exact same picture to my author blog, to Twitter and Facebook, via my blog. The blog post received over 20 likes here at WordPress, where as on Twitter it received NONE. Granted one person came from Twitter that day, however, they were not one of the people who liked the picture post.

Now most people would find this counter-intuitive. Shouldn’t a short form platform be better for posting pictures? Apparently not! In fact, the same picture got no response on Facebook either. Speaking of Facebook, lets move on.

Facebook business pages are supposed to help out your business. However, they do not! The current algorithm used by Facebook, hides your business posts from people who have actually “Liked” the page. WTF? So a business brings in people, only to not be able to market to them? That is just the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Had I know they had switched to this new algorithm, I would not have bothered setting up the page. I can see that I will be dumping the business page in favor of using my personal page. It simply makes no sense, to share pictures with people who most likely will never see them.

This leads me to what appears to have the most potential for a photographer…Instagram. I have just started this account and have only 6 pictures up. Seems like I have my work cut-out for me. BTW, if you want to follow me on Instagram, I go by j.b.thomas(No caps and no spaces). Please don’t follow me if you don’t plan on sharing photos you like. 🙂 Having an Instagram up and running, still has its drawbacks. Business profiles are frowned upon and you must still post your pictures at Facebook and Twitter, because both sites tend to ignore outside posts.

Despite all these little drawbacks to success, it seems like things are beginning to take shape. The ad I placed on Craig’s List (http://houston.craigslist.org/crg/5900979589.html) has already gotten responses and it appears I should have a few models, both male and female, to round out my portfolio. This is obviously a step in the right direction. I am slowly but steadily, getting my photos up from 5 years of photography and 16 yrs. of graphics, onto my web store. Eventually, I will build a website that has a blog devoted strictly to photography.

All things considered though, there have been some setbacks, but I believe I am moving in the right direction. Just might take a little longer to get there…

I hope you found some value in this post and if you live in the Houston,Tx. area, keep me in mind for your photography needs. Take care and have an amazing weekend!
